What is Functional Medicine?

Functional medicine understands that while there are individual organ systems, the body is an integrated, interconnected system that isn’t siloed. Meaning, when you sleep and nutrition is not optimized, your stress response can be compromised which then impacts your GI system, nervous system, cardiovascular system, etc. Functional medicine aims to get at the root cause of an issue, not put a band aid fix on a systemic problem. Burnout is a systemic problem. I can help you get to the root cause and solve this problem once and for all!

I specialize in supporting female Nurse Leaders who want to say goodbye to burnout and stress! I do so by addressing the underlying causes specific for each individual.

As a nurse leader myself, I am on a mission to help female nurse leaders combat stress and burnout. As a Functional Medicine Certified Health Coach Candidate, I help female nurse leaders tackle their stress and burnout by rebuilding their foundation: sleep, nutrition, social connection, movement and stress management.

In 2019, I became a nurse manager on a step-down burn/ trauma/ surgical inpatient unit at a Level 1 trauma and academic medical center. I thought the chaos I experienced came with the territory of being a nurse manager. I was new to a unit, leadership team, leadership role, specialty patient population and new group of staff members. I was barely above water. Then, the COVID-19 global pandemic hit. While I remember certain aspects of the pandemic, most is a blur. Self-care and boundaries didn’t exist because they couldn’t. I was trying to manage a unit, keep my staff informed, on-board traveler RNs at an unsustainable pace, and so on.

It wasn’t until my body told me enough was enough and I was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. My body was attacking itself. While I was grateful for a diagnosis because I knew something was wrong. It was a painful wake up call that I was beyond stressed… I was burned out to the point of illness. I needed to examine my life and career. I seriously considered leaving nursing. I decided to prioritize my health and set out on my own journey to heal myself and overcome my burnout. I found functional medicine and the rest is history.

Now, 15 months later I feel energized, have strong work boundaries and I travel the country as an interim nurse manager. Healthcare environments haven’t gotten any easier since 2019, they have just become worse. Nurse leaders have a lot of pressure to keep the ship together and moving in the right direction. The result is unsustainable levels of stress, burnout and health consequences.

If you are a nurse leader ready to say goodbye to stress and burnout while optimizing your health and wellness, I invite you to work with me!
